Paste or type, and get a live word count and character count - both with and without spaces - plus sentences, paragraphs, reading time, and a reading-level estimate. It all runs in your browser; your text is never uploaded.
Free, no sign-up. Everything is counted right here in your browser - your text is never uploaded, which matters if you're pasting a draft you'd rather not send to some random site. Words are whitespace-separated; characters are counted both with and without spaces; reading time assumes about 200 words per minute. The reading level is an estimate from two standard readability formulas - Flesch-Kincaid grade and Flesch Reading Ease - which look at how long your sentences and words are; English syllable counts are approximated, so treat the level as a guide, and give it at least a sentence or two of text. Reading time is estimated from your word count at an average reading speed, giving a rough minutes-to-read figure for the pasted text.
The tool estimates a reading level using the Flesch-Kincaid grade and the Flesch Reading Ease score, based on how long your sentences and words are. It shows a US school grade plus a plain-English label like Easy or Fairly hard. These are estimates, so use them as a guide, and give it at least a sentence or two of text.
